NHS Athletics/Summer Camps Update - July 20

Sports

Dear Parents/Guardians of Summer Camp Participants:

As you may have heard, the governing body that oversees high school athletics, California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), released an update for how they plan to run athletics for the 2020-2021 school year. They have decided to combine the three sports seasons that typically run into two sports seasons. The announcement from CIF Southern Section Commissioner Rob Wigod can be found here.

This announcement, paired with Governor Newsom’s announcement on Friday about how schools will reopen in the fall, has unfortunately forced us to cancel NHS summer camps for the remainder of the summer. As you know, summer camps went through many forms and modifications over the last few months and our coaches worked extremely hard to develop plans to keep their student-athletes safe. The work of planning these camps and developing practice plans that met local, district, and state guidelines was a task that many of our coaches willingly took on and we are extremely grateful for and proud of their flexibility. As you know the cost of running high-quality athletics programs is beyond the base fiscal model that the district provides. This will especially be true this year based on the complexity of the new calendar and school structure. As a result, we hope you will consider donating your summer camp money to the individual sports program. Each summer camp fee will remain in the account of the specific sport and will allow the program to solicit fewer donations as the school year begins. This will support compensating coaches for the time they put into the summer camp program before it was canceled and run an effective offseason in preparation for the 2020-2021 athletics year, as well as help address other program needs for which we would typically solicit donations through the NHS Athletic Booster program.

If you already requested a refund from summer camps before June 30th, your refund check should arrive in the mail later this week. If you registered and paid for camp after July 1st, we will be mailing your registration payment back to you. If you do not wish to donate your camp fee to the team and would like to request a refund for summer camp, please complete this survey by Sunday, July 26th at 8 pm to ensure you receive a refund. If you do not request to receive a refund by Sunday, your money will be directed to that sport’s account and will be used for coaching stipends, offseason play, and other program needs.

Thank you for your continued support and flexibility during these unprecedented times.

Stay well.
