Mental Health & Wellness

If you or someone you know is in crisis, please call 911 immediately.
If you have a serious or urgent concern outside of school hours, do not email NHS staff;
contact the Irvine Police Department at (949) 724-7000.

Resources, referrals, and counseling staff support are readily available upon request by either the student or family. In addition, our department has developed Canvas announcements, workshops, wellness events, advisement activities, and school-wide events that support student mental health, balance and overall well-being.

Please reach out to your student's counselor or another trusted adult (teacher, administrator, coach, or other support staff); we care about your student and we are here to help.

    IUSD is proud to partner with Hazel Health, a telehealth behavioral health company. Through Hazel Health, IUSD students (K-12) are able to access virtual Mental Health and Wellness support from home. Hazel uses therapeutic processes delivered by licensed therapists. This service is being offered at no cost to IUSD students.

    A parent/guardian may refer their student through a link found here or a referral can be made by the student’s school counselor, mental health specialist, school psychologist, or administrator at their school. Students must have parent permission to enroll for services unless they are 18 or older.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

    How much will Hazel Health cost?

    If a family has insurance, Hazel will bill the insurance to cover the cost, and there will be no fees to families. If a family does not have insurance, they may access full services at no cost.

    My family’s first language is not English and I prefer to receive services in my native language. Is that possible?

    Most likely, yes. Over 40% of Hazel Health providers are bilingual, representing over 19 languages.

    What does the process look like after the initial referral is made?

    Communication is not initiated until a referral is made, either by a parent/guardian or school-team member. Once a referral is received, a Hazel Health team member will reach out via phone call and text to confirm the request for services and the initial intake is scheduled. Hazel does require a parent or guardian be present for the intake, unless the student is 18 or older.

    IUSD has partnered with Care Solace, a confidential and free service that connects families with mental health providers and therapists in the community. Care Solace works with the family's insurance and financial ability and connects families with available providers that align with the family's needs and other criteria.

    A parent/guardian may refer their student here or a referral can be made by the student’s school counselor, mental health specialist, school psychologist, or administrator at their school.

    The District provides school-based mental health/wellness services and resources to students and families. These services include short-term individual or group counseling for students at the school site; short-term, solution-focused therapy for students and families through the IUSD Family Counseling Center; and resource linkages to community-based mental health or social services for students and families. Services are provided by counselors or licensed mental health professionals. Please visit the IUSD Mental Health & Wellness website for more information.
