Social Sciences

Humanities Core is required of all 9th & 10th grade students.  It is designed to provide the richness of a traditional English Language Arts program and a traditional History program, combined with an emphasis on culture.  Northwood High’s curriculum accentuates the interrelatedness of these sometimes isolated disciplines and, in so doing, advances a holistic view of knowledge.

Students in grade nine will study major turning points that shaped the modern world mostly from the late 18th century through the 20th.  Students will examine patterns of global change in Europe, Africa, Asia, North America, Latin America, the Middle East & South Asia.

Students in grade ten will examine the events that shaped this country as well as the influence that the United States has had on the rest of the world.  Students will examine the cultural & political evolution of modern society.

In grades 11 & 12, students are required to take Economics (semester) and American Government (semester) but also have their choice of a wide array of social science electives ranging from Forensic Psychology and World Religions to AP World History/United States History.
