On Thursday, November 2, 2017 we will be running our third annual State of the Student Day (formerly Wellness Day). This will be dedicated as a time for the Northwood High School community to embrace the whole child approach to educating our students to give them tools they can use to deal with stress and the need for balance in their lives. The theme of this year’s day is Resiliency (#gotgrit)
The desire for such a day emerged from past staff meetings about student stress, student feedback about stress levels, and our ongoing school-wide action plan to address this issue. This is a chance for us to connect with students outside of the typical classroom routines and help them see that there are ways in which they can help themselves. By knowing how to handle the hurdles they will face in their lives, we hope our students will begin to look at these moments not as obstacles but as opportunities for growth and progress. We are looking forward to working with all of our students on November 2nd.
The different departments at Northwood have taken on various topics all relating to resiliency. We hope this is allow the students to take some time out of their busy schedules to work with their peers and NHS staff. The schedule will include a 9am start time for all students and three session schedule for TA, Period 3 and 4. The schedule is included below and it will also be posted on the NHS website. The day will include an extended lunch from 11:15-12:15. Thanks to the generous support of the NHS PTSA and local business community, we will be providing lunch for all students and staff, free of charge. We will also include some activities for the students during this time including staff vs. students kickball game and other activities put on by our ASB
Finally, we would like to remind you that this is a day for all NHS students. As such, attendance is expected. Similar to any other school day, all absences will need to be cleared through the attendance office. Only verified absences will be excused (eg. Illness, Funeral, Court, Religious…).
The Northwood staff is excited to use this time to engage with students about how they approach their education. We appreciate your support.
